A recent survey reveals the quintessential elements of America's favorite grilled cheese sandwich, highlighting preferences for bread type, cheese selection, and the preparation method. The survey, conducted by Talker Research and commissioned by Tillamook County Creamery Association, offers insights into the nation's love for this classic comfort food.

Survey Insights

The survey, which included responses from 5,000 Americans, found that the ideal grilled cheese sandwich typically features white bread, is cut into triangles, and includes two types of cheese. Cheddar and American cheese emerged as the top choices, with 44% and 40% of respondents, respectively, favoring them. Cheddar was particularly popular in states like Wyoming, Arkansas, and Utah, while American cheese and pepper jack also received significant attention nationwide.

Bread and Coating Preferences

White bread was the top choice for 43% of respondents, followed by sourdough at 24%, which was notably preferred on the West Coast. When it comes to achieving the perfect crispy exterior, 71% of respondents recommended butter for coating the bread, while 12% opted for mayonnaise. A combination of butter and mayonnaise was favored in states like Delaware, Idaho, and Washington.

Grilled Cheese Enthusiasm

The survey also highlighted the widespread enthusiasm for grilled cheese sandwiches, with 62% of respondents identifying as "grilled cheese enthusiasts." Georgia led the nation in this regard, with 76% of its residents expressing a passion for the sandwich, followed closely by Washington and Delaware. Additionally, 84% of Americans reported that biting into a perfectly crispy and gooey grilled cheese is one of their favorite experiences.

Consumption and Emotional Connection

On average, Americans consume three grilled cheese sandwiches per month, with residents of Delaware and Idaho enjoying them even more frequently. The survey also revealed that 72% of respondents turn to grilled cheese as a comfort food when feeling down. Executive Chef Josh Archibald from Tillamook emphasized the sandwich's comforting nature, noting its dynamic and decadent qualities.

Additional Preferences and Methods

Many respondents enjoy pairing their grilled cheese with sauces, such as ranch, ketchup, and honey mustard. Popular additions to the sandwich include bacon, ham, and tomatoes, while some opt for more unique ingredients, such as pickles and potato chips. The preferred method of preparation is using a frying pan, followed by a griddle or grill.

The survey underscores the universal appeal of the grilled cheese sandwich across the United States. Despite regional variations and personal preferences, the love for this simple yet satisfying dish remains a common thread among Americans. Whether enjoyed with a classic combination of cheddar and American cheese or with creative additions and sauces, the grilled cheese remains a beloved staple in American cuisine.
