Survey Indicates Conditional Consumer Confidence in Foodservice

A recent survey conducted by Stampede Culinary Partners has highlighted the current state of consumer confidence in the U.S. foodservice industry. The study, titled "The State of Consumer Confidence in Restaurant & Retail 2025," surveyed over 6,400 U.S. consumers and found that 83% report at least some level of confidence in restaurants and retail foodservice providers. However, nearly 20% of respondents described their trust as "low," "tentative," or "conditional."

The research identifies key factors influencing consumer confidence, including consistent service, clear value, and the ability to deliver on promises. The findings suggest that consumer loyalty now heavily depends on a reliable and quality experience that justifies the expenditure.

The data indicates a shift in consumer trust, moving away from concerns about safety to issues related to unmet expectations around quality, consistency, and communication. The survey also revealed that 30% of consumers believe the restaurant experience has deteriorated over the past five years. Additionally, one-third of respondents reported dining out less frequently than a year ago, although 51% are spending more per visit.

Consistency, service, and transparency emerged as the primary drivers of trust among respondents. The study underscores the message that while consumers are not abandoning dining out, they are raising their expectations. Businesses that consistently deliver quality and communicate value effectively are more likely to secure lasting consumer loyalty.

The report offers actionable insights for restaurant operators, retailers, and supply chain partners on how to rebuild and maintain consumer trust in the coming year. The full report is available for download on the Stampede Culinary Partners website.
