Location totals are estimates for the United States and Canada as of September 1, 2026. The Index ranks entities, and parent and subsidiary profiles may overlap; totals should not be added together.

Why Entity-Level Restaurant Research is Paramount

The Index is not a conventional ranking of nonduplicated restaurant chains. An entry may be a restaurant brand, parent company, concept parent, large franchise operator, multi-concept company or ultimate owner. That is why Roark Capital Group and Inspire Brands appear alongside Subway, McDonald's and Taco Bell, and why a parent and one of its brands may both be present.

Companies with comparable location totals can have very different operating structures. Following the entity behind the brand helps suppliers, technology companies, investors, advisers, real estate firms and researchers understand ownership, purchasing scale, franchise relationships and operating control.

A Public View of Restaurant Enterprise Scale

At 100 profiles, the Index provides a broader public reference for restaurant-company scale and ownership structure across the United States and Canada. Additional profiles will be published as research is completed, while existing profiles will be reviewed as restaurant organizations, location totals, leadership and ownership relationships change.
