Grubhub has released its 2024 Delivered Report, revealing notable trends in consumer food ordering. The report, which analyzed orders from restaurants, grocery stores, and convenience stores, indicated a trend towards “doing the most,” with customers frequently adding extras.

The report showed a particular preference for protein, with chicken featuring in almost 40% of all Grubhub restaurant orders and three times as often as beef in grocery store orders. Consumers also showed a fondness for cottage cheese, with over a ton of it delivered by Grubhub this year.

Espresso consumption also spiked, with customers adding more shots to their orders than in previous years. In 2024, Grubhub offered nearly 15,000 unique variations of lattes.

Orders for pickles increased 14%, and convenience delivery became increasingly popular. Hotdogs, bananas, and sodas were the top items ordered from convenience stores.

The return-to-office trend resulted in a 53% increase in corporate coffee orders, while Mexican cuisine was the most popular international cuisine.

University students preferred energy drinks, particularly during midterm season in February. Decaf orders increased by 5%, with 21% placed after lunch.

A taste trend dubbed "swicy" (sweet and spicy), saw a 30% increase in hot honey purchases.

Travelers preferred to dine in their hotel rooms, with 60% of all hotel delivery orders occurring during dinner time. Alcohol orders also spiked in hotel orders.

Family meals also saw increased popularity, with over 1.6 million ordered through Grubhub in 2024.
