Food Service Workers Seek Assistance Every 28 Minutes, Report Finds
A report by Giving Kitchen reveals that food service workers are requesting assistance every 28 minutes, underscoring the industry's ongoing challenges.
On September 25, recognized as National Food Service Worker Day, the nonprofit organization Giving Kitchen reported that food service workers are reaching out for help every 28 minutes. This statistic highlights the significant demand for support within the industry, which employs a large portion of the American workforce.
Giving Kitchen, which provides emergency assistance to food service workers facing crises, released data indicating that in August alone, the organization distributed $277,175 in financial aid. According to a survey conducted by the nonprofit, nearly 84% of recipients stated that the assistance helped them avoid potential homelessness, while 75% reported it prevented eviction. Additionally, 71% of those surveyed said the financial support helped them avoid skipping meals to save money.
The report also noted that over 1,200 children in the households of food service workers were part of families seeking assistance. This data underscores the broader impact on families within the industry, beyond the individual workers themselves.
National Food Service Worker Day serves as an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of various roles within the industry, including chefs, line cooks, baristas, and school cafeteria staff. The day aims to raise awareness about the support available to workers and encourage public participation in recognizing their efforts.
To support food service workers, Giving Kitchen encourages the public to share stories, dine out at participating restaurants, and volunteer. The organization has facilitated community involvement through initiatives such as using the hashtag #FSWDay to share experiences and express gratitude on social media.
Since its inception, Giving Kitchen has provided over $16.3 million in financial assistance to more than 31,000 food service workers nationwide. The organization continues to offer resources through a multilingual call center, aiming to build a supportive community for workers in crisis.
