Today, Altamarea Group announced the upcoming opening of their signature concept, Marea, in Shanghai, China, the first quarter of 2018. The first U.S.-conceived Altamarea brand to land in the Asian market, Marea Shanghai will be located in the renowned Plaza 66 complex on West Nanjing Road in the bustling and chic Jing'an District.
"We are excited to bridge Marea from New York to Shanghai — two high-energy and vibrant cities — where great food has prominence in the fabric of society," said Altamarea Group CEO, Ahmass Fakahany, and Chef Michael White. "Though very different cultures, there is a natural connection, and we will embrace the similarities and equally respect the differences as we meet client expectations."
Plaza 66, is recognized as one of China's most successful commercial developments with a most distinguished luxury brand tenant list. Marea Shanghai will feature an updated and more modern design aesthetic, reflecting the vibrancy and lifestyle of its location, while still maintaining the subtle elegance the New York restaurant is known for. Altamarea Group is working with prominent partners and designers that also span Hong Kong and Taipei to strike the right balance between east and west. Centrally located on the 3rd floor, the 5,000 sq. ft. space will include just 85 seats, including three private rooms. This lower seat count speaks to the emphasis on quality and the focus on highly personalized client attention and service.
Joining and partnering with the multi-Michelin starred chef Michael White is Paul Downie, who will relocate to Shanghai full time to helm the restaurant as General Manager and cultivate a local and global client program. Previously, Downie, was general manager at both Heston Blumenthal's two Michelin-starred Dinner in London and three Michelin-starred Eleven Madison Park in New York. Most recently, he managed service standards across Starr Restaurants' portfolio including the highly-successful opening of Le Coucou (James Beard Award winner for 2017's Best New Restaurant).
Adjacent to the third floor restaurant and extending to the fourth floor courtesy of a spiral staircase, Altamarea Group will also debut a new, and more casual dining concept, along with a cocktail lounge, called Club W by marea. This will add another level of dining and energy at Plaza 66 and is being developed only for the local market.
