Today the National Restaurant Association (NRA) praised federal leaders’ commitment to workforce training programs through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. NRA’s Executive Vice President of Policy and Government Affairs, Scott DeFife, issued the following statement of support:

“We applaud President Obama’s enactment of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act which addresses the critical need of updating and reforming our nation’s workforce development programs. As the nation’s second largest private sector employer, the restaurant industry provides vital professional training to a workforce of over 13 million Americans. We supported this bipartisan legislation knowing that greater access to education and job training are essential to growing and stimulating our economy.

“The restaurant industry provides opportunity for career growth and pathways to success. Restaurant employees of all backgrounds and experience levels learn fundamental skills such as teamwork, multi-tasking, customer service and time management while on the job. These skills remain with individuals throughout their careers, whether they stay in the industry or move into other professions.

“We look forward to continuing our work with state and federal leaders and the business community in providing comprehensive workforce training.”

Founded in 1919, the National Restaurant Association is the leading business association for the restaurant industry, which comprises 990,000 restaurant and foodservice outlets and a workforce of more than 13.5 million employees. We represent the industry in Washington, D.C., and advocate on its behalf. We operate the industry's largest trade show (NRA Show May 16-19, 2015, in Chicago); leading food safety training and certification program (ServSafe); unique career-building high school program (the NRAEF's ProStart); as well as the Kids LiveWell program promoting healthful kids' menu options.
