Groups Fear Fallout From Anticipated Immigration Crackdown

A new government crackdown on employers who have hired illegal immigrants will likely lead to increased turnover in workplaces and could prompt labor shortages on farms and ranches, according to representatives of industry groups in Texas.

What's unclear is whether it will deter illegal immigrants from taking jobs.

Federal officials are expected to announce today that they're moving ahead with tough rules initially proposed last year that would obligate employers to fire workers who provide false documents.

The approach would require employers to follow up on notices from the Social Security Administration that an employee's name and Social Security number don't match. Workers who can't fix the discrepancies would lose their jobs, or their bosses would face criminal sanctions for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants, The Associated Press reported. The government is expected to raid more businesses to boost enforcement.

The Bush administration held off on implementing the rules as Congress tried to pass a sweeping immigration bill, which died in June. Some members of Congress have pressed for stronger enforcement of the nation's immigration laws.

But that will put "a significant new burden on all employers," said Richie Jackson, chief executive of the Texas Restaurant Association.
