Guatemalan chicken chain takes roost in Chicago

The chicken is legendary. It is so good, travelers have been known to tuck bags of it into their carry-on bags to bring home to family and friends.

At lunchtime, people wait in line for an hour for it. And that's on a weekday.

The recipe is, of course, a secret. But those who have eaten it say it is like no other fried chicken on the planet.

And now Chicagoans can get a taste of it.

Pollo Campero, a Guatemalan fried chicken chain with a cult-like following among Latin Americans, opens its first Chicago location today at Brickyard Mall on the Northwest Side, at Diversey and Narragansett.

Within Chicago's Latin American community, word of the opening has been circulating -- and mouths salivating -- for weeks.
