Big Boy rolls out ambitious, bold redesign
Madison Heights is the first Metro site to see new decor, murals and panels of windows
The dark, drab wallpaper is gone and so are the fake hanging plants
Big Boy Restaurants International LLC is launching a bold, new look -- bright colors, new booths and tables and splashy wall murals -- at the chain's new restaurant on John R near 13 Mile in Madison Heights.
The Warren-based chain is undertaking its most ambitious redesign in years as it tries to drive sales, increase investment and broaden clientele.
Most of the new features -- bright red, blue and yellow decor, a panel of windows to brighten the restaurant and nostalgic touches such as a checkerboard motif -- will be rolled out at the chain's 455 franchises over several years.
Three years ago, the company hired Cleveland design firm Louis & Partners to update its outdated look -- a dreary-looking interior of dark wallpaper and artificial ferns.
"We have a mature brand, and you constantly have to reinvent yourself," Big Boy CEO Tony Michaels said. "We wanted to bring the restaurant to the forefront and make it more fun and colorful."
