Association Execs Tackle Harassment, Advocacy Issues

Steve Danon, the National Restaurant Association senior vice president of public affairs, led a discussion on legislative and regulatory challenges seen at the state and local levels.

Executives representing the National Restaurant Association and several of its state partners addressed front-burner issues, including how to end sexual harassment in the workplace, at the Restaurant Directions conference in Nashville, Tenn.

Steve Danon, the Association’s senior vice president of public affairs, along with Greg Adkins, CEO of the Tennessee Hospitality & Tourism Association, Karen Bremer, CEO of the Georgia Restaurant Association, and Mindy Hanan, president and CEO of the Alabama Restaurant & Hospitality Association, met June 26 to discuss legislative and regulatory challenges they’re facing and how they’re dealing with them. Also on the agenda: wage and tip issues, immigration and the industry’s shallower labor pool.

In addressing the National Restaurant Association’s commitment to reducing and preventing sexual harassment in the workplace, Danon introduced ServSafe Workplace, our new program created to educate managers and employees about acceptable and unacceptable behaviors among staff members. He also stressed that webinars are being offered free of charge throughout the summer.
Among the topics for discussion: Wage and tip issues, immigration and the industry’s shallower labor pool.

Turning to the subject of advocacy, he recalled how former Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill famously said, “All Politics is Local,” explaining that some of the industry’s toughest battles today are fought at the state and local levels. “The people leading those fights in the trenches are the same ones I’m honored to share this stage with today,” he noted. “It is because of their tireless efforts that restaurants continue to be the fabric of American communities.”

He also told attendees they should deepen their involvement with their state Associations ‑‑ if they haven’t already done so ‑‑ and become more active in the state legislative process.

Danon added that the Association is committed to working closely with its state partners to ensure that lawmakers understand how their decisions affect business.
