Chef John Besh, operator of The Besh Steakhouse at Harrah's Casino New Orleans, will be the featured chef January 24 at a dinner celebrating "Great Regional Chefs of America" at The James Beard House in New York.
Recognition from The James Beard Foundation, which fosters the appreciation and development of culinary heritage by promoting each aspect of the culinary arts, is considered one of the highest achievements in the culinary world.
The recognition is the latest in a string of recent national honors for Besh, who has been listed among Food & Wine magazine's "Top 10 Best New Chefs in America." Last October, Gourmet magazine listed Besh's first restaurant, New Orleans' Restaurant August, in its "Guide to America's Best Restaurants."
"Just shy of its second birthday, Restaurant August is spoken of in the same breath as the city's most distinguished institutions," the magazine wrote.
Restaurant critic Brett Anderson of the New Orleans Times-Picayune has also praised Restaurant August, writing last June that Besh had "willed one of the region's most celebrated restaurants into one of the region's best restaurants, period."
In July 2003, Besh launched his second New Orleans restaurant -- the Besh Steakhouse, located in Harrah's Casino. A sophisticated marriage of American steakhouse and French Bistro cuisine, the Besh Steakhouse at Harrah's offers players and patrons steaks, chops and seafood in a distinctive Vegas-style setting.
Harrah's New Orleans is operated by Harrah's Entertainment, Inc. Founded 66 years ago, Harrah's Entertainment owns or manages through various subsidiaries 25 casinos in the United States, primarily under the Harrah's brand name.
