Just in time for holidays, the iconic California restaurant chain Sizzler has unwrapped a multi-million dollar makeover of its 10 Sacramento and Central Valley restaurants. Late last month Sacramento-based MarLu Investment Group finished a complete overhaul of its Auburn restaurant. It also remodeled and upgraded the location on Madison Ave. in Sacramento, while owners of the other restaurants – BMW Management and parent company Sizzler USA – also have updated their restaurants’ décor.

“Sizzler is excited that the newly renovated restaurants better represent and showcase the high quality, fresh food and made-from-scratch soup and salad bar items that we serve,” said Sizzler president and CEO Kerry Kramp.

Last year, veteran Sacramento restaurateur Tony Lutfi, CEO of MarLu, acquired a pair of Sizzler restaurants. Longtime fixtures on the Sacramento dining scene, they needed updates to their food, service and facilities. “Having eaten at Sizzler for more than 25 years, I wanted to help lead its revival here in Sacramento and elsewhere,” Lutfi said. His company owns and operates more than 140 restaurants, including brands such as Jack in the Box, Church's Chicken, Arby's and Little Caesars, as well as 26 Sears Appliance and Outlet stores. “Sizzler's focus on high quality food and value, combined with its pay-first, ‘fast-casual’ service style, make it even more relevant today than when it was founded 55 years ago,” he said.

In total, more than $16.5 million has been invested in building new Sacramento and Central Valley Sizzlers and remodeling existing ones. The restaurants employ more than 350 people and generate more than $20 million in sales.

The effort to make over the Sacramento and Central Valley Sizzlers actually began in 2007 when BMW Management built the first of what it calls the “new generation” Sizzler prototype in Natomas. It then added new locations in Turlock and southeastern Sacramento on Florin Rd, while remodeling restaurants in Cameron Park, Modesto, Stockton and Yuba City.

Guests have responded very favorably to the updated look, with remodeled restaurants seeing a substantial jump in sales as new customers of all ages, including ones in their 20s and 30s, start visiting.

“When people walk into a new generation restaurant, they are impressed with the colorful photographs, dramatic lighting and lively decor. They tell us they cannot believe it is a Sizzler,” said BMW Management president and CEO Gary Myers. “The new look brings them in, but it’s really the quality of today’s food and service, and the value, that keeps them coming back.”

Along with investing in restaurant makeovers, Sizzler continues to add fresh, new items to its menu, such as Cedar Plank Salmon with a soy ginger glaze, while highlighting guest favorites, including Steak & Lobster for the holidays, priced at just $14.99. That’s $2 less than last year.

“At a time when many restaurant operators are looking to cut back and save money, BMW and MarLu continue to invest in the Sizzler brand,” Kramp said. “Everyone in the Sizzler system is working hard to pay back the trust our loyal guests have placed in us for so many years. Continuous menu innovation and restaurant upgrades are the best way for us to say ‘thank you’ to our current guests and invite new ones to visit.”
