IINC, L.A. LIVE and Law Enforcement Toast Holiday Designated Drivers

Battling bartenders will descend on a downtown Los Angeles hot spot today to promote responsible holiday hospitality by competing to create the best alcohol-free mocktail.

“These non-alcoholic drinks will put the fun back in the festivities for those responsible for driving their friends home.”

Hosted by the Insurance Information Network of California and L.A. LIVE, the Battle of the Bartenders® will team up the California Highway Patrol , the Los Angeles Police Department and bartenders from L.A. LIVE restaurants and bars to demonstrate how party hosts can serve quality non-alcoholic drinks to help keep their guests safe on the ride home.

The event pits bartenders against each other to develop the best original non-alcoholic drink. Beverages are judged on presentation, creativity, taste and simplicity. The contest will kick off at 11:00 a.m. today at the ESPN Zone at L.A. LIVE.

Representatives from law enforcement, the insurance industry and sports will judge the drinks and the award-winning recipes will be available following the event at www.battleofthebartenders.org.

Alcohol-related crashes resulted in 1,239 deaths and 19,659 injuries in California in 2008, according to the CHP. In Los Angeles County alone, 258 lives were claimed and 4,832 people were injured in alcohol-related collisions.

“The Battle of the Bartenders® is more than competition. It’s a reminder to holiday hosts that by serving interesting non-alcoholic drinks, they make it easier for their driving guests to say no to alcohol,” said IINC Executive Director Candysse Miller.

“For designated drivers, the holiday parties don’t have to start and end with club soda,” said Michael Roth, AEG’s Vice President of Communications. “These non-alcoholic drinks will put the fun back in the festivities for those responsible for driving their friends home.”

Battle of the Bartenders® is a registered trademark of the Insurance Information Network of California, a non-profit and non-lobbying trade association dedicated to helping the public understand insurance and manage risk.
