  • Cornell Students Put Theory into Practice While Raising Support for a Good Cause

Students in the Cornell School of Hotel Administration’s Catering and Special Events Management class will host their annual Charity Auction on Friday, November 5, 2010,  from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Statler Hall on the Cornell University campus. The event will be set against an Arabian Night backdrop and will feature Middle Eastern cuisine, belly dancers, and exotic décor. Guests will have the opportunity to bid on a large selection of items, including resort/hotel stays in Vietnam, Singapore, and California; theater tickets; snowboarding lessons; wine; and much more.

Proceeds from the evening will be donated to three charities: Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), which represents the best interests of abused and neglected children in the courtroom; Loaves and Fishes of Tompkins County, a nonprofit organization that provides free meals and advocacy for those in need; and EGBOK Mission, an international non-profit organization that provides hospitality industry training to young adults in developing countries. Last year’s charity auction donated more than $20,000 to Meals on Wheels and the Keith O’Donnell Scholarship Fund.

“The charity auction will be bigger and better this year than ever before,” said Senior Lecturer Rupert Spies, who has taught the course for over 20 years. “The students have been hard at work soliciting items and planning food, music, and entertainment in order to make this an enjoyable event for all ages. They are not only giving back to the community, but they are also putting their classroom learning into practice through hosting a live event.”

Tickets for the charity auction can be purchased in advance for $15 at www.cornelltickets.com. Tickets will be $20 at the door.
