While Robert Vasquez spent more than a decade working in the restaurant industry and eventually running his own franchises, he also was turning up the heat on his next business idea.
Anyone in the restaurant business knows it can be a pressure cooker of a job. Restaurant owners, whether they have one eatery or a chain, have to worry about supplies running out, late deliveries, unexpected price hikes on food, inaccurate paychecks because a cook didn't clock out, even expensive steaks that sometimes walk off. That's all part of the daily and nightly drama.
When Vasquez, an owner of five CrepeMaker franchises in South Florida, was actively managing day-to-day operations, the restaurants seemed to be taking over his life, robbing him of time with his wife and two young sons. He also believed he could put his technology expertise to good use, designing a better system for fellow restaurant owners.
Last year, he began designing a software system for the restaurant industry.
While there were software and point of sale systems that help restaurant owners manage many operations, there wasn't one application that dealt with just about everything, Vasquez said. Multiple software systems also can get expensive for restaurant owners, particularly in this economy when they are keeping track of every penny.
Vasquez and his team developed Kitchen Porter Tech, named after the ''kitchen porter'' whose job is organizing the kitchen and making life easier for the chef.
Kitchen Porter Tech is a Web-based application that connects restaurateurs, franchisors, franchisees, management, staff, vendors and customers through a centralized location that's always open. This lets a restaurateur monitor and control back-office operations from any place at any time.
Vasquez's plan for Kitchen Porter Tech not only won first place in the Business Plan Challenge Community Track but it also was the Challenge Champion.
