Three Students With Food-Focused Majors Each Receive $5,000 Award
Three Kendall College students are being honored today after having each earned a $5,000 scholarship through a program sponsored by U.S. Foodservice Chicago.
A reception to recognize the students was held today on the college campus. Scholarships were awarded to:
• Rachel Grabelsky of Chicago, a senior in the Culinary Associate/Hospitality Management Bachelor's program. She is deciding on a career path in the culinary and hospitality industry.
• Jin Sun Helen Kim of Los Angeles, a senior majoring in hospitality management. Kim is focusing on convention and meeting planning, hoping to begin a career in the meeting industry. Eventually, she would like to open up a family restaurant with her parents.
• Katie Simmons of Louisville, a first-year student in the Accelerated Associate Degree in Culinary Arts program. Simmons aspires to be a chef in the restaurant industry.
"For many students, scholarships like these are a vital component in funding their college education and for some, these scholarships make all the difference in assisting students and their families in covering college expenses," said Felicia S. Davis, vice president of student administration and dean of student affairs at Kendall College. "Receiving a U.S. Foodservice scholarship has a significant and positive impact on students who are working to complete their degree program and meet their educational goals. Everyone at Kendall is proud of our longstanding relationship with U.S. Foodservice and their continued commitment to us. We are equally proud to have a partner who not only shares our commitment to education but illustrates it by providing our students with these scholarship opportunities."
U.S. Foodservice has offered scholarships for several years to Kendall students enrolled in the school's culinary, hospitality management and business programs. Plans for a career in the food industry were among the evaluation criteria. This year's winners were chosen from a field of 93 applicants.
"These students represent the future of the foodservice industry," said Dan Gilroy, president, U.S. Foodservice Chicago. "We are honored to support them in their efforts."
