AllBusiness.com, Inc. revealed the first annual AllBusiness AllStar Franchises List which ranks the top 300 franchises for 2009, at the International Franchise Association 49th Annual Convention. The AllStar list can be found at www.allbusiness.com/allstar-franchises.

The AllBusiness AllStar list is the Web's first interactive franchise ranking. Site visitors can sort the winning companies by the factors that matter most to them, thereby creating their own personal ranking.

In a time of economic distress, it is particularly important for potential franchise owners to assess the fiscal responsibility as well as the financial growth of each franchise opportunity. As a result, the AllBusiness AllStar list is the only one of its kind to incorporate financial strength criteria using credit and financial stress information from parent company Dun & Bradstreet, the world's leading source of commercial information and insight on businesses. In addition, the AllBusiness editors took into account a number of other key business indicators when compiling the ranking, including:

    • Web Visibility (a quantitative measure of brand awareness on the Web utilizing Google and Alexa ranking data)

    • Growth Trajectory (how fast new franchises are being added)

    • Business Longevity (how long has each company been in business and franchising)

    • System Size (the total number of franchises and company-owned units)

Subway(R), Dunkin Donuts(R) and Choice Hotels International(R) are in the top three spots, respectively, on this year's list. Decreased consumer spending has created a boon for budget-friendly hotels and restaurants/food franchises. Those types of businesses are predominant in the top 20 AllBusiness AllStar positions:

    • 7-Eleven(R) (#4)

    • Buffalo Wild Wings(R) (#7)

    • Hampton Inn/ Hampton Inn & Suites(R) (#8)

    • Smoothie King(R) (#9)

    • Denny's(R) (#10)

    • Long John Silver's(R) (#11)

    • McDonalds(R) (#12)

    • La Quinta Inns(R) (#14)

    • Hardee's(R) (#15)

    • Baymont Inn & Suites(R) (#16)

    • Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches(R) (#17)

'Franchised businesses are likely to employ a sizable portion of the talent pool currently looking for new career opportunities due to corporate layoffs,' said Rieva Lesonsky, Editor-at-Large and Franchise Adviser for AllBusiness.com. 'The AllBusiness AllStar list incorporates the financial, marketing and growth data needed to help future entrepreneurs avoid costly mistakes and choose the right franchise. No other ranking includes the financial strength indicators that we've incorporated using D&B credit scores and financial stress scores.'

Additionally, the AllBusiness AllStar list provides a ranking specifically for retired military personnel. The Veterans Transition Franchise Initiative (VetFran) provides unique financial incentives for veterans seeking to own a franchise. The top 10 AllStar franchises that offer VetFran programs can be found here: www.allbusiness.com/allstar-franchises/veterans.

Other categories featured prominently in the AllStar list include automotive, health and beauty and children-related businesses. The complete AllBusiness Franchise Center, which includes the full Franchise Directory, the new AllStar rankings, and thousands of valuable how-to articles, can be found at www.allbusiness.com/franchises.
