Franchisees challenge DQ in court

A group of more than 1,700 Dairy Queen franchisees on Wednesday sued Edina-based International Dairy Queen over proposed changes the franchisees say would bankrupt them or destroy the value of their stores.

Two years ago, International Dairy Queen unveiled a plan it called "Concept Evolution," intended to create a more-consistent, modern restaurant brand - and reduce the number of different types of Dairy Queen restaurants.

Given that International Dairy Queen has a longstanding group of mom-and-pop owners who have operated with a fair amount of independence over the years, getting them to toe the company line has long been a challenge.

Like other fast-food chains, International Dairy Queen has said that it needs to make substantial changes to win customers who want to adopt healthier eating habits and are bored by the old choices.

The franchisees have been opposed to many aspects of the "Concept Evolution" from the start, and they said the company's responses to their concerns have been "unacceptable." Calls to International Dairy Queen were not returned Wednesday.
