  • External Source In the mid-1990s, Barilla pasta was virtually unknown in American stores and supermarkets. Today, Barilla is the largest-selling brand of dry pasta in the United States, with a market share of nearly 20 percent, according to retail sales tracked by Information Resources Inc., a market research firm in Chicago.

Barilla even seems to be having success in bucking the industry trend of falling sales because of the low-carbohydrate food craze.

"What they've done is really remarkable," said Josh Sosland, editor of Food Business News, a food industry trade publication based in Kansas City, Mo.

Barilla is based in the northern Italian city of Parma. Descendants of the Italian pasta maker who founded the business in 1877 own the company.
