Getting your morning jolt of caffeine will cost 11 cents more a cup at Starbucks (SBUX) coffee bars starting Wednesday — but Starbucks' packaged products sold in supermarkets will remain an affordable wake-up alternative.
Currently, a 2-oz. double espresso costs $2.06 at a Starbucks here, vs. $1.95 for a 6.5-oz. can of DoubleShot espresso. A basic 12-oz. Frappuccino costs $3.86, compared with $1.62 for a 9.5-oz. bottle.
The prices will stay the same for the packaged versions, also known as "ready-to-drink." But they have far to go if they are to rival coffeehouse drinks in popularity.
"Ready-to-drink coffee in the U.S. today is still very small," says John Sicher, editor of newsletter and tracker Beverage Digest. He says the business is "largely one brand, Frappuccino, and that holds 80% of the category."
Coffee is the No. 4 beverage behind soft drinks, beer and milk in the USA.
