With an abundance of new energy saving technologies being promoted by proven and unproven vendors one of the most important responsibilities we engage in daily is evaluating new technologies. Sustainable this, organic that. The green movement is all the buzz in the hospitality industry. Many hotels and restaurants have embraced the movement, but many are still trying to sort it all out.

Whatever the driving force, energy efficiency will be an integral part of staying successful in this competitive business environment.

Daylighting is defined as the practice of placing windows or other openings and reflective surfaces so that during the day natural light provides energy efficient lighting inside. So why would a hotel owner want to take on the challenge of using daylight to light their hotel?

Today’s new generation of optimized, “high-efficiency” T8 lamps and electronic ballasts are available in a range of energy-saving models. Energy efficient lamp and ballast systems contribute significantly to reducing energy consumption and costs by nearly 30%. Paybacks of one to three years are common.

Hotel operators and owners know that linens are an important part of their business. It’s hard to create an at-home feeling for guests without plush, designer bath towels and linens.

A new report by, the non-profit research organization, Center for Responsible Travel (formerly Travel Center on Ecotourism and Sustainable Development) found that responsible tourism has withstood the global recession better than the tourism industry as a whole. Perhaps that’s one reason many hotels are eagerly embracing Earth Day (though we’d like to think that a growing commitment to sustainable practices plays a role).

EcoGreenHotel recognizes the importance of using disposable food service items made from renewable resources in the effort to lessen the impact disposable products have on the environment. Using compostable plastic forks, spoons, to-go containers and cups made from renewable resources allows hotels to significantly reduce the amount of refuse going to the landfill and make a positive local.
